As the holiday season approaches, fall is the perfect time to reassess the state of your health. Instead of getting overwhelmed by the stress and temptation of the season, you can take charge of your health and your weight loss. Here are a few tips you can use to set yourself up for a healthy season.
Take advantage of the high-tech active wear that is on the market these days. Cool weather performance gear offers all you need in the crisp autumn weather: warmth, support, wind-proofing and moisture-wicking. With the amount of comfort they provide—not to mention how stylish a new running jacket can make you feel—there is no excuse to stay inside. Treating yourself to new gear can be a great motivator to getting up off of the couch and out in the fresh air for some exercise.
Stay Smart on Game Day
Football and food seem to go hand-in-hand, so this fall, be sure to take control of your tailgate menu. Opt for colorful veggies and protein-rich foods. Slow-cooker chili made with grass-fed beef and vegetables is a great option. Or snack on dry-rubbed baked chicken wings.
Take Advantage of Your Health Savings Account
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flex Spending Accounts (FSAs) are offered through many employers or banks for use on qualified healthcare expenses. These funds (which are not considered taxable income) may be able to be used for acupuncture or chiropractic treatment, and even massage therapy. Flex accounts fall under a “use it or lose it” category, so be sure to spend your funds by the end of the year. HSAs can be accrued from year to year.
Lab testing is generally an allowed expense for FSA/HSA funds, so consider using your funds towards a comprehensive panel. This is a great investment in your winter health and can provide you with crucial information to better your weight loss success.
Admire the Scenery
Fall is a gorgeous time of year, so take advantage of it. Plan a long weekend bike ride, pick apples at a local orchard, or simply go on a walk. Appreciating the cool air and changing colors can relieve stress, and it can also help you fit in a day’s work out.
Healthy Party Planning
Don’t let fall family gatherings take your focus off of your goals. Take charge of meal plans and delegate who brings what dish for Thanksgiving dinner. Steer the menu towards healthier options with fewer processed carbohydrates. You can also help plan family events that can incorporate exercise your day. Corn mazes, pumpkin patches and scavenger hunts are all great options to have fun and stay active.
