If drinking soda is one of your guilty pleasures, you should stop to think about what you’re really ingesting each time you take a sip. Soft drinks, especially diet ones, are among the worst things you can put in your body. If you want to live a long, healthy life you should reconsider any soda-drinking habit that involves more than occasional consumption. Ideally, you should avoid drinking soda altogether, and here are five reasons why:
1. Fattening formulations
Soda has virtually no nutritional value whatsoever. If you’re trying to lose weight, eliminating soda is a no-brainer. There are no benefits to drinking soda other than the taste, and there are plenty of healthy, tasty alternatives (like water twisted with lemon or lime).
Beyond the empty calories, research has shown that the high fructose corn syrup found in soda actually triggers a hunger hormone that causes you to eat more food than your body actually needs. If you think you’re doing yourself a favor by drinking diet soda instead, think again. Diet sodas have been linked to the very same health problems as regular soda, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease. In fact, multiple studies show that that drinking diet soda actually makes you gain weight!
2. Genetically modified mess
When sodas were first created they were sweetened with natural cane sugar. Most sodas today are made with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which makes cane sugar seem like a health food by comparison. HFCS is derived from corn, and since most corn in the U.S. is genetically modified, HFCS is full of GMOs. Most corn has been genetically modified so it can survive being sprayed with pesticides and herbicides that would kill most living things. Toxins aside, GMOs are essentially a foreign body that your body doesn’t recognize, and more and more studies are now linking GMOs to major health problems.
3. Cancer-causing Coca-Cola
The “caramel color” soda manufacturers use to give colas their dark hue is essentially a bunch of synthetic chemicals. These chemicals have been found to be carcinogenic according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Although many countries have banned the use of these chemicals, the U.S. has not.
As if the cancer-causing coloring isn’t enough, diet sodas give you a double whammy. The artificial sweeteners used in diet soda are well-established carcinogens.
4. Tasty toxins
Whether soda comes in a plastic bottle or aluminum can, chances are the container is made or coated with BPA or a BPA derivative that is known to cause multiple health issues. Secondly, most sodas are made by using unfiltered municipal tap water, which may contain unhealthy levels of industrial runoff, pharmaceutical drug residue and other chemicals.
Then you have the fire retardant. Many sodas are made with “brominated vegetable oil,” which is used as a fire retardant in many industrial applications.
5. Heart disease, diabetes and depression, oh my!
There are numerous health consequences from drinking soda. Soda consumption is obviously correlated with obesity, and obesity is associated with a plethora of health problems including diabetes and hypertension. But you don’t need to be obese to experience the negative side effects of drinking soda. One study links the consumption of soda to a 20% higher risk of developing coronary heart disease. Other studies links diet soda to a 61% increase in strokes and heart attacks. As if that isn’t enough, other research has shown that the artificial sweeteners used in diet soda can cause behavioral and cognitive problems as well as depression.
Your body will thank you for eliminating soda from your diet, and you will see better results on your weight loss journey.
Please spread the word about the dangers of soda (especially diet soda, which is marketed as being “healthier” for you). The more people know about the mounting evidence showing the numerous health consequences of these drinks, the better.
