Juicing and blending smoothies are two popular aids in weight loss–but what is the difference?

Juicing is creating a liquid drink from raw whole ingredients (fruits and vegetables) using a juice extractor (juicer). A smoothie is made by blending raw whole ingredients (fruits and vegetables) into a pulp. Smoothies are thicker and generally more filling, but both juicing and blending smoothies have great benefits.

Both juice and smoothies contain soluble fiber, which is excellent for your digestive tract. These fibers also help lower blood cholesterol levels, improve good bowel bacteria and stabilize blood sugar. Fiber helps to keep our digestive system full of good bacteria so that it can function properly.

It is recommended that you eat at least 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and smoothies and juice are a great way to do that. Although less filling than smoothies, juice provides immediate boosts of energy because the liquid is absorbed into the cells and bloodstream at a much faster rate. It is important to always use whole fruit in a juicer as the fiber in whole fruit keeps the body from getting too quick of an absorption of sugar. Smoothies take longer to digest, but keep you full with the nutrition and fiber you need to keep your gut healthy.

It is wise to incorporate both juicing and smoothies into your diet when you are trying to reach your weight loss goals. Discuss with your medical weight loss counselor when you should use them as meal replacements to boost your weight loss even more.

Apple Crisp Juice

Ingredients

Apples – 5 medium
Celery – 2 stalk, large
Oranges (peeled) – 2 fruit

Directions

Process all ingredients in a juicer, shake or stir and serve.

Green Smoothie

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups water
Head Romaine Lettuce- chopped
Celery – 3-4 stalks, large
Spinach – 1/2 head large bunch
Apple – 1, cored and chopped
Pear – 1, cored and chopped
Banana – 1
Lemon Juice – 1/2 a lemon

Directions

Add water and chopped head of romaine to blender. Blend at a low speed until smooth.
Add spinach, celery, apple, and pear and blend at high speed.
Finish with banana and lemon.
